Commissioning a portrait is an easy and straight forward process, and far more enjoyable and rewarding than you might think. Whether you are looking to shortlist an artist for an official portrait or are simply looking for that “special present” for a loved one, I would love to hear from you.

First Step

The first thing to do is make contact, by phone or email to let me know what sort of commission you have in mind. I can make some suggestions or you can use the size and pricing guide on the website. Anything is possible with painting so I promise to consider all budgets whether large or small, and any of your ideas, whether simple or complex. The most important part of this stage is that you feel confident about the commission and your mind is at ease. When we have arrived at a final agreement we will be able to book a mutually convenient date for the first sitting. I will then send you an invoice to set out all the relevant details that have been discussed. Normally I ask for fifty percent of the total agreed amount to be paid before the sittings commence, with the remainder becoming due on completion and your satisfaction of the final work.

Procedure

I can paint on site from life or entirely from photographs, although my preference is to use a mixture of reference material and techniques to heighten the visual relationship. Beginning with one or two life sittings at a place of your choosing, we will have some relaxed conversation while I make some drawings and take some photographs. After returning to my studio I’ll work on a few different composition options which will then be sent to you via e-mail. You can choose which images you prefer from my selection and then we can begin. When the portrait is nearing completion I’ll send you some images of the portrait and you will be able to advise on the finishing touches/final adjustments. After the portrait is complete and everyone is happy with the outcome a convenient time for it to be delivered will be arranged.
